What does it mean to settle?
Does it mean that all these black pots, gang up on my kettle and
meddle in my life
telling me whats right
for whom to sacrifice my heart and who's love is worthy of my fight?
What does it mean to settle?
Does it mean you limit your love
by accepting a bad situation and volunteering to be victim
with passive participation
claiming what you want but making no initiation to really have it?
Does settling mean your habit
of taking the blows he impresses upon your body
make you that ride or die kind of shawty
because you take his abuse and lie to everybody?
the fist face two step, that's the dance at this party?
What does it mean to settle?
To love the one your with
but cheat behind their back
make a fool out of the one who helps you live
while you ditch deep grooves for pavement cracks?
sin like the best sinner but say God's got your back?
What does it mean to settle?
To take on the dude even though he tips the bottle?
to take on the fool just because she weaves herself into a model?

And I Am Telling You... Breaking Up Is Hard To Do!

Dreamgirls was a successful Broadway play for years. It even made it's way to the big screen in 2006. Original headliners of the staged version included then little known Loretta Divine and now long forgotten Jennifer Holliday. Watching the performance of the then robust and popular Holliday allowed me to witness her successful portrayal of the scorned character Effie White. In a passionate performance she screamed, sobbed and belted the lyrics of "And I Am Telling You, I'm Not Going" in such a way that years later many have made a valiant effort to match her vocal bravado in singing the same song. Of those attempts, most have fallen far from the mark. With this knowledge, I wondered why was it that Jennifer Hollidays career didn't move much further beyond her Dreamgirls fame. Upon doing a bit of google research ( not the most reliable, but definitely the most convenient) I have found several theories as to why Jennifer Holiday's career came to a standstill...

When I was about 14 my mother gave me a book called "Good Morning Holy Spirit". It was a Christian book that was aimed to keep believers in tune with God. It encouraged the reader to wake up each morning and greet God, allowing Him to play a role in your life each day. I still try to do that. When I heard that K-Ci and Jo-Jo were coming out with a reality show documenting their experience going through rehab, I was excited. The first thing I wanted to know was which one was K-Ci and which one was Jo-Jo (yes, it has been that long since I have seen let alone heard of them since highschool).
